Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen some unprecedented and frightening changes around the world as a result of COVID-19. We’ve watched as events are canceled, travel becomes restricted, and towns (and even countries) go into lockdown.

\n

In an effort to slow the spread of coronavirus and protect the vulnerable, an increasing number of companies — including Google, Twitter, Shopify and more — are asking their employees to work from home. Here at 1Password, we’re a largely remote company by nature, but even we have implemented steps to slow the spread of the virus by closing our meeting spaces and eliminating business travel.

These are important steps we should all take to protect our teams and loved ones.

We’re following news of COVID-19 as closely as you are, and our hearts go out to those who’ve been impacted. We also know that many people who aren’t directly affected by the virus have still seen their lives disrupted, including school closures, canceled community gatherings and small businesses struggling to keep operations running smoothly.

\n

We’ve heard from so many of you over the past few weeks. People — particularly in regions harder hit by COVID-19 — are already using Discord to keep in touch and stay on track with their everyday lives, from attending classes remotely to working from home.

\n

We wanted to find a way to help, so we’re temporarily upping the limit on Go Live to 50 people at a time, up from 10. Go Live is free to use and lets people privately stream or screen share apps from a computer while others watch on any device — so teachers can conduct a class, co-workers can collaborate, and groups can still meet. You can learn more about how to get started with Go Live here.

While we created Discord to bring people together around games, we’re thrilled that so many of you are using it in so many different ways. We’ll maintain the higher user limit as long as it’s critically needed — we hope it makes peoples’ lives just a little easier and a little less stressful day-to-day.

Finally, because we anticipate a surge in demand for Go Live, we hope you’ll be patient if you happen to encounter any performance issues.

With COVID-19 continuing to impact people and countries around the world, teams everywhere are moving to remote work. Earlier this week, I posted a letter from Lily Zheng, our colleague in Shanghai, detailing her team’s experience using Microsoft Teams to work from home during the outbreak. Lily’s team is one of many. Here at Microsoft in the Puget Sound, we’re encouraging our teams to work from home as much as possible, as are many organizations in this region. And we expect this trend to continue across the world. At Microsoft, our top priority is the health and safety of employees, customers, partners, and communities. By making Teams available to as many people as possible, we aim to support public health and safety by keeping teams connected while they work apart.

\n

As we have read through your responses to Lily’s letter, it has become clear that there are two big questions on your minds. First, how can people access the free Teams offerings that Lily referenced? Second, what is our plan for avoiding service interruptions during times of increased usage? Below, you’ll find detailed answers to both. And over the next few days we’ll be sharing more tips, updates, and information related to remote work here. So check back often.

\n

Making Teams available for everyone\nTeams is a part of Office 365. If your organization is licensed for Office 365, you already have it. But we want to make sure everyone has access to it during this time. Here are some simple ways to get Teams right away.

Individuals

If you want to get started with Teams, we can get you up and running right away.

\n\n

IT professionals

\n

The self-service links above work great for individuals, but if you’re an IT professional who wants to roll out Teams centrally, here’s what to do.

\n

If you work for a business that isn’t currently licensed for Teams, we’ve got you covered with a free Office 365 E1 offer for six months. Contact your Microsoft partner or sales representative to get started today. (Note: the same offer is available in the Government Cloud, but not available in GCC High and the Department of Defense.)\nIf you work in education and want to set up teachers, students, and administrators on Teams, use Office 365 A1. This free version of Office 365 is available to all educational institutions. Sign up by following this link.

Keeping Teams up and running

\n

You and your team depend on our tools to stay connected and get work done. We take that responsibility seriously, and we have a plan in place to make sure services stay up and running during impactful events like this. Our business continuity plan anticipates three types of impacts to the core aspects of the service:

\n\n

Active/Active design: In Microsoft 365, we are driving towards having all services architected and operated in an active/active design which increases resiliency. This means that there are always multiple instances of a service running that can respond to user requests and that they are hosted in geographically dispersed datacenters. All user traffic comes in through the Microsoft Front Door service and is automatically routed to the optimally located instance of the service and around any service failures to prevent or reduce impact to our customers.

\n

Reduce incident scope: We seek to avoid incidents in the first place, but when they do happen, we strive to limit the scope of all incidents by having multiple instances of each service partitioned off from each other. In addition, we’re continuously driving improvements in monitoring through automation, enabling faster incident detection and response.

\n

Fault isolation: Just as the services are designed and operated in an active/active fashion and are partitioned off from each other to prevent a failure in one from affecting another, the code base of the service is developed using similar partitioning principles called fault isolation. Fault isolation measures are incremental protections made within the code base itself. These measures help prevent an issue in one area from cascading into other areas of operation. You can read more about how we do this, along with all the details of our service continuity plan, in this document.

Adjusting to remote work can be a challenge. We get it, and we are here to provide the tools, tips, and information you need to help you and your team meet that challenge. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread, it affects all of our communities in different ways. The health and safety of Scale AI’s employees, as well as our global community of labelers, is a critical matter and a responsibility we do not take lightly. That’s why we’ve taken action over the past several weeks to protect both our full-time and contract employees, and ensure we can continue to offer the high-quality services our customers expect.

We also want Scale AI to make a contribution to combating this disease if we can. Research to track and contain the virus is in its early days, but we know that better data could make a difference. Scale AI’s Employees, Labeling Community and Customers

The safety of our team, both full-time and contractors, is a top priority. As a technology company, we are fortunate to be able to leverage existing communications tools to maintain collaboration. Scale AI’s ML-enabled platform also gives a global, work-from-home workforce the ability to deliver data annotation at the level of quality and volume our customers expect. Anyone working with a basic laptop and internet connection can utilize our platform. We are proud to provide a safe option for workers to continue to earn wages to support themselves and their families throughout this period of uncertainty.

We have also reached out to our customers to let them know how we’re working to deliver products and services. We do not expect any disruption to our work at the moment, however, because the situation remains fluid, we will continue to closely monitor our operations. In the event of a disruption, we will make sure to coordinate with your teams to minimize any impact.

Accelerating COVID-19 Research

\n

Adjusting to the reality of a new disease has been difficult and unsettling, but it has been heartening to see a range of companies and organizations come together to help combat this pandemic. We want to make our own contribution to these efforts where we can.

Given the scale of the pandemic, researchers should have every tool at their disposal as they try to track and counter this virus. Researchers have already shown how new machine learning techniques can help shed new light on this virus. But as with all new diseases, this work is much harder when there is so little existing data to go on.

\n

In those situations, the role of well-annotated data to train models or diagnostic tools is even more critical.

\n

Our mission at Scale AI is to accelerate the development of AI applications. To help in those efforts, Scale AI will provide free data annotation services for any researcher working on diagnosing, containing, tracking or finding a vaccine or long-term cure for the virus.
